We have been having a high degree of turnover among our younger employees, and I am wondering if this is just a common occurrence with Generation X. If so, what are some good ways to retain them?

It is easy to think that Generation X actually means Generation Exit, but there is more to this generation's work ethic than that. They may well be more mobile than their predecessors, and it is important to understand why.

Research is finding that Gen X'ers seek interesting, challenging, flexible, and growth-oriented jobs that provide learning opportunities as well as balance between work life and personal life. While they have interest in making money, money per se is not their primary objective. At the same time, Gen X'ers do like to see a link between their pay and performance.

Other findings indicate that many Gen X'ers enjoy working as part of a team, but they want autonomy and the opportunity to think creatively. It is important that they sense that their work has meaning and significance. They also want to be part of the decision-making process, and they seek frequent feedback on their performance -- in fact, some say on a daily basis.

It is interesting to note that these types of work elements are important not only for many Gen X'ers, but for many employees from any generation.
