Complaints Suggestions

Our company just put in a suggestion program, and I don't see the point. If I come up with a really good idea, I get some crummy award and a certificate, and the company gets the benefit of my great idea. Since there's so little for me to gain, I figure I'm just going to forget about it. If the company isn't willing to pay, why should I waste my time?

Since you think your company has such a marginal suggestion program, why don't you make a suggestion that helps the company put in a better one? This will call for some homework on your part, but there are all sorts of suggestion programs out there, including some that include incentives.

Management is trying to send a message that there is real interest in the employees' ideas and inputs. You can certainly ignore the whole program, but to do so would be ignoring an opportunity to make your work more satisfying.

Even if the company has no intention of changing the program, there are additional ways for you to benefit by using it. For example, you might generate some suggestions that are actually implemented, and the feelings of achievement, recognition, and competence associated with that can go a long way. And, if you come up with a number of good ideas, you are also generating some major positive attention for yourself, and that can help you and your career go a long way, too. So, here's the key suggestion for you: use the program to let management see how creative, insightful, dedicated, and promotable you are.
