Tests Internet Stereotyping Oversimplification

When I sit at my desk, I usually tuck one leg under the other. One of the senior consultants said that a personality test on the Internet found that when a male sits like this, it is a sign of deference and weakness. He added that I should never do it in front of a client. Did you ever hear of anything like this?

It must have been difficult for you to sit through this senior consultant's inane comments. Telling people how to live their lives as a result of pseudo-psychological tests on the Internet is not exactly state-of-the-art management.

The Internet is a great dumping ground for would-be psychological tests from never-would-be psychologists. These tests can be packaged with appropriate lingo, but they lack the in-depth analysis and validation that accompanies all professional psychological tests.

While many aspects of body language can be quite revealing, such as a person's facial expression and certain gestures, crossing one leg under the other simply does not fall into the category of personality indicators. The main reason why you sit with your legs in such a position is that it is comfortable for you.

If your manager is truly interested in making an accurate judgment about your deference or strength, there is something that can give him far more accurate insight. It's called your behavior. Drawing conclusions about personality on the basis of simple tests on the Internet is virtually absurd.
