Working Conditions

I am a manager, and our company is cutting back on office space. I just learned I am going to be working in an office with no windows. I think this is a step backward. I am upset and wonder if I should make an issue out of this.

When companies cut back, some employees lose a window and others lose a job. Although you are not happy with this development, you should take a look at the big picture and realize that although it is not a picture window, it is not all that terrible.

There are plenty of offices without windows that are still warm, inviting, and comfortable. You can find books and articles on this topic, and you may have a friend who can help with some plants, artwork, and layout ideas.

In these times, there are vast cadres of employees who have offices with spectacular views, but who has time to look? It is true that some status can be associated with having a window, but there are plenty of offices with windows and no employees at all.

You should not try to read too much into your move to a windowless office. The company has already demonstrated its faith in you. Your ability to hunker down and do a great job in this situation is going to give top management a revealing window into you.
