Terminations

I sort of have this feeling that I am going to be fired. I'm not a terrible employee, but I'm not the best either. I work hard and usually do a good job, although I have had some disagreements with my boss over the past year. Are there any signs that usually mean a person is about to be fired?

There are many signs that can tell you when you are approaching the exit ramp in your current job. Some are rather subtle, while others are as apparent as the proverbial ton of bricks.

For example, if you find that your manager has less and less time for you, and he or she is seemingly less interested in what and how you are doing, that can be an indicator. If you find you are excluded from meetings that you used to attend, or if projects that used to come your way are now going elsewhere, those too can be signs.

On a more apparent basis, if you have been receiving frequent negative feedback and counseling, and your file is growing thick with such documentation, that should tell you something. Of course, one of the most obvious is if you happen to spot an ad for your position in the local paper or online.

In the meantime, you should be looking at actions to prevent your termination. For example, since you say that you are not the best employee, what can you do to improve? In addition, what steps can you take to generate a truce with your manager?

It is important to remember that if you think you are going to be fired, you are likely to engage in behaviors that will bring that exact outcome.
