Stress Food

One of our senior managers went to a management seminar and was told that carbohydrates cause the brain to produce serotonin, and that reduces stress. Now he is putting out high carbohydrate snacks such as crackers, pretzels, and chips. What do you think of this as a way to reduce job stress?

In this age of carb consciousness, this is a new one. Although the era of feverish carb counting appears to have passed, the pendulum has not swung to the point that people are now counting carbs in order to increase their intake.

There are plenty of proven methods to reduce stress at work. These include creating a safe and hospitable environment, treating employees with respect and trust, emphasizing fairness and ethical treatment, and removing arbitrary obstacles that are preventing employees from meeting their goals.

One can argue that your manager's support of this high carb buffet is actually a source of increased stress. The snacks that you mentioned typically include many calories and a good deal of salt and fat, none of which will do most employees any good. Unwanted weight gain and increases in blood pressure can be quite stressful. In addition, since carbohydrates ultimately convert into sugar, the idea of increasing the employees' blood sugar levels is not going to do much for stress management either.

If management truly wants to reduce stress, a better approach is to focus on the progressive managerial practices noted above, and to emphasize healthy eating, exercise, and perhaps some meditation and yoga. Either way, carbohydrates are not the best mantra for stress reduction.
