I have worked here for three years, and I have a good salary. I am upset because I have not received a raise in this period, but other people have. Because of my salary level, I feel a little foolish asking for a raise. Do you have any suggestions?



There can be any number of good reasons why you have not received a raise for three years, but there is no good reason for the lack of communication on this matter.

One of the major sources of pay-related dissatisfaction is pay equity. For example, people can be quite satisfied with their pay until they learn that others are being paid the same amount for less work or a larger amount for the same work.

The fact that you have a good salary does not automatically lock you out of the raise process, unless you lock yourself out. You should meet with your manager, but the discussion should not be focused solely on asking for a raise. Try to focus initially on questions about the raise process itself, such as how the policy works, how to qualify for raises, and how raises are handled for people who have been with the company for a number of years.

This line of questioning will help you determine if your lack of raises was due to policy, oversight, performance issues, or any other reasons. This information will help you determine what to do next, and no matter what you hear, try to learn the specific steps you need to take in order to receive a raise, and then take them.
