Feedback Performance Evaluations

My manager keeps putting off my performance review. It was due three months ago, and whenever I ask him about it, he says he'll do it soon. I don't know if he thinks I am doing a good job or not, and I'm even wondering if he is stalling because he wants to fire me. What should I do?

Managers who fail to provide their employees with timely reviews should have this deficiency noted when they are reviewed. Providing employees with timely performance appraisals is very important on numerous levels, especially in terms of motivation, documentation, training, and succession planning.

The fact that you do not know if you are doing a good job further highlights your manager's shortcoming. Independent of a formal appraisal, your manager should be meeting with you frequently to discuss your performance and provide coaching and guidance.

If your company has a human resources department, you should see if they can give him a push. In addition, if you have some colleagues who are in the same boat, several of you should meet with your manager to express your concern and try to set a timetable to get these evaluations done. A final step is to ask your manger if there is anything you can do to help get your appraisal process started.

As for your fear of being fired, one could just as easily argue that if your manager wanted to terminate you, he would conduct the appraisal and use it as a means to further document poor performance.
