Honesty Application Blanks Job Interviews Finding a Job

About four months ago, I was "let go" during a probationary period from a job where I had very limited experience. I have a bachelors degree and this position did not require a degree, and it paid substantially less than my previous jobs, most of which have been professional. After 15 years in social services, I decided to change the direction of my career and do something different. I have now taken this risk and it did not work out. Should I list this job on applications? If I don't, there will be a six-month gap in my employment history. This dilemma is causing me great stress and anxiety.

If you lie about your work history and then get a job, you are likely to experience great stress and anxiety over the possibility that the truth will come out, and then you will also be out.

Your truthful story should not turn any possible employers away. You are a college grad who established a successful career path. Like many people today, you decided to explore something different. You did so, and it was not a good fit. As a result, you are returning to your professional field with greater self-insight, motivation, and direction.

Naturally there are stories about people who kept this type of experience off of an application blank, or they inserted other lies, and then went on to greatness. However, there are plenty of less enticing stories where employees were terminated when such fabrications were discovered. As you said, you took a risk and it did not work out. Don't take another one over this matter.
