Transfers

Over the past couple of years, several employees have transferred out of my department and into others. This means I have to spend more time hiring and training new staff, and it is difficult to get departmental continuity. I am concerned that the large number of transfers could be a negative reflection on me. What do you think?

The fact that many employees are transferring out of your department could be a negative reflection on you, but if you reflect further on this matter, you will see that it could just as easily be a positive reflection on you. When there are managerial problems that lead to a departmental exodus, the manager is typically advised, coached, or counseled. You would know if your employees are simply trying to get away from you.

Other managers are most likely interested in transfers from your department because of your employees' skills, training, and overall performance. This is a positive reflection on your ability to select and develop employees.

The large number of transfers is also positive for your company. Having multiple internal opportunities for employee growth and advancement is a clear sign of a desirable place to work. A manager's goals are ultimately to help the company succeed, and that is exactly what you are doing, occasionally at the expense of needing to replenish staffing in your own department.

At the same time, if employees are beating a path to other departments because of better opportunities to advance, you should review and clarify career paths for employees who stay in your department.
